Chapter 8
âWhat time is your first appointment again?â Bailey's mother asked her.
Bailey moved her rolling chair from her workstation and unlocked her drawer. âThirty minutes. She's leaving town with her husband and wants her nails done.â
Her mother laughed. âTo make an appointment for 8:30 in the morning, it must be an emergency.â
Bailey heard the music through the radio. âMust be.â She watched her mother arrange the piles of hair and fashion magazines on the coffee table in the waiting area. Was this the right time? She couldn't keep singing in Jackson's band from her mother forever. âMom, I need to tell you something.â
âWe open soon Bailey. Can it wait?â her mother said.
Perhaps it wasn't the right time. Bailey swallowed despite her dry mouth. She couldn't hold it inside anymore. âMom, I met someone.â
Her mother grinned. âYou have?â
âWe met⦠online.â
Her motherâs eyes widened. âIâm surprised.â
âItâs not that unusual,â Bailey said. Would her mother disapprove of him?
âWellâ¦â Her mother folded her arms. âDo we need to run a background check?â
âI donât think so.â
Her mother sighed. âI raised you to be responsible. Nowadays it doesnât matter where you meet people. I taught you to look for character. Actions speak louder than words. Be careful and wise.â
âYouâre not going to ask me about him?â Bailey asked. Her mother responded better than she thought.
âI will, so prepare yourself.â Her mother winked at her.
Bailey wrung her hands together. âMom, thereâs more. I've been... singing.â
Her mother pivoted to face her. She lifted a single eyebrow. âWhat?â
She took a calming breath. âThe man I met, he's in a band.â
âYou get that from your father.â Then Bailey's mother sat on the couch and folded her arms.
âMom, I didn't mean to keep it from you.â
âSo youâre not only seeing someone without my knowledge but youâre singing too?â
âI know how you feel about music,â Bailey said. She wouldnât emphasize that she was a grown woman. She never won that argument.
âDo you?â Her mother fixed her stare at her. âI can't tell you what to do, but I saw what music did to me and your father.â
âBut you said he quit.â
âBecause he realized what was...â Her mother choked at her words. Her chin quivered.
âWas what? Would it be so wrong if I went for it? I never thought I could do it, but when I'm on stage, it's a different world.â
âBailey...â Her mother then clasped her hands together and stared at the floor. âI'd rather not talk about this. You have a client, and I have a few items left in inventory before mine shows up.â
âI didn't mean to upset you,â Bailey said.
Her mother stood and walked over to her. She placed her hands on her daughter's shoulders. âThere's so much I...â
Bailey raised her eyebrows. Did her mother want to say more? âWhat Mom?â
Her mother shook her head. âNot now.â She walked to the supply room without another word.
Bailey lips parted as her cell pinged inside her pocket. She read the text from her client. She was on her way.

Bailey eyed the neon exit sign at Mac's Nightclub and Lounge.
